Juliana Thomas earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, in Bogota, Colombia. She also completed a Masters Degree program in Biology-Herpetology at the Universidad de los Andes, in Bogota Colombia. She moved to the United States in 1997, and completed her Teaching Licensure at NCSU. She has been teaching for 25 years, in Colombia and in the USA, but also worked as a biologist at Crocodile Farms in Colombia. She has now been teaching 6th grade at EMS for 15 years.
Loren Kent | EMAIL | Loren Kent earned her BA in Broadcast Journalism and Communications from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. After working in the private sector for several years, Loren returned to school to pursue teaching certification. Through the NC Model
Teacher Education Consortium, Loren successfully completed teacher certification in Middle Grades Language Arts and Social Studies in 2006. She was a finalist for 1st year Teacher of the Year in Johnston County and in 2010 was a JCS Flame for Learning/TOY finalist.
Loren is a life-long learner guided by the question, “Am I doing what is best for kids to succeed?” Her previous experience in the private sector adds value and relevance to classroom instruction by providing real-world examples and connections to content.

Devon Rose earned her BS in Middle Grades Education from North Carolina State University. Devon earned a Master’s degree in New Literacies and Global Learning with a concentration in Language Arts from North Carolina State University. She is certified to teach Language Arts and Social Studies in sixth-ninth grades. Devon has been teaching at Exploris since 2008.

Shawna graduated from San Diego State University in her home state of California where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies and Elementary Education with an emphasis in Mathematics. She completed her Masters in Teacher Education at Eastern Oregon University. She taught for 4 years in inner city Phoenix, Arizona schools before moving with her husband and two young children to Raleigh in 2007. Since then, she has taught for Wake County Public Schools in various elementary settings and was Science lead teacher for 7 years, supporting teachers in grades k-5 with implementing and integrating Science in their classrooms. She completed her American Montessori Society certification in 2013 and has taught in a lower elementary public Montessori classroom for last six years.
Shawna has two children,11 and 9, who are also newcomers to the Exploris family. When not in the classroom, Shawna enjoys spending time with her family at various sporting events, concerts, camping and the beach. Shawna is excited to be part of the Exploris community and is looking forward to a wonderful year of learning and fun!
