ELA stands for English Language Arts.  Sixth grade ELA classes are based on the Common Core State Standards. Listed below is a link to the ELA Common Core Standards.  Reading and writing are at the core of all academic disciplines and each grade level teaches a class centering on these skills.  As much as possible, literary selections and writing assignments correspond to expedition topics being studied at the time.

Loren Kent

My name is Loren and I am excited to be a part of your
6th-grade chapter in the book of life. This will be my 18th year teaching middle school. Previously I worked in the music business and the travel industry, but I truly always wanted to be a teacher. I have always loved learning and teaching gives me a chance to learn new things all the time! I have a son, Redick, who keeps me laughing. My husband Michael and I have been married for 20 years. I also have a 28-year-old step-daughter, Danyelle, and I am a grandma! I now have a beautiful granddaughter named Sadia. One of my favorite things to do is read. I love reading with Redick or on my own when I have time. My love of reading and writing is what inspired me to be an ELA teacher. I also love cooking! I found a few years ago that I am allergic or intolerant of wheat, corn, dairy, and rice so I had to slow down and be more thoughtful about my diet. This inspired me to focus on my love of cooking. Luckily, I can still have coffee and GF oats or I’m not sure I could
survive! I’m looking forward to a great year with you!

Devon Rose

My name is Devon and I’m looking forward to a great year with you. Middle school can be a challenging, yet exciting time and I’m excited to help you navigate your middle school career. This is my fourteenth year at Exploris and I’ve taught both sixth and eighth grades.
I grew up in Garner and currently live there with my
husband, Andrew, and our chocolate lab, Lucy. Our lab, Lucy, is nine years old and is the best dog and companion in the world. Andrew and I will be celebrating our ninth wedding anniversary in October. I have three nieces and two nephews and try to see them as much as I can. Being an Aunt is awesome and makes me so happy! When I’m not at school, I love to spend time with my family, read, cook, go to the beach, and cheer on the Wolfpack! Cooking is one of my favorite things to do. I try to make at least one new recipe a week. Pinterest helps me with this endeavor! I’m a HUGE N.C. State fan and you can often find me at a football, basketball, or baseball game. Looking forward to a year of learning and laughter with you!
